What is Poutine?
Poutine is a French-Canadian classic that originated in Quebec and is popular across Canada. The province’s gastronomical achievements may reach dizzying heights but Quebec will forever be known as the birthplace of poutine. It slightly resembles American Gravy Cheese Fries but different in many respects. Made from fresh cut French fries and cheese curds covered in brown gravy or other sauces combined with a variety of toppings.
Originally made popular as a late-night bite, this rapidly expanding food has gone mainstream with breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late-night variations of the dish. In fact, many National franchise chains in Canada have added Poutine to their primary menus, and both U.S. and Canadian chefs with international reputations have begun to create their own gourmet varieties. This rapid growth in popularity prompted The New Yorker magazine to raise the question “Has Poutine becomes the unofficial national food of Canada?”
If your initial reaction to poutine is that of bewilderment, then obviously you have never tasted our Poutine with various custom toppings. At Jimmy’s, you can order poutine in Tex-Mex style— complete with beef chilli, guacamole, black beans, and corn—in a vegetarian blend, as a Middle Eastern dish, or even an Asian-inspired serving with stylized toppings like Falafel or Chicken Tandoori. The combinations are endless.
Visit us at our restaurants across America and choose from over 30 varieties of Poutines, or customize your own. Enjoy it with an array of mouth-watering milkshakes.
HOW DO YOU LIKE OUR POUTINE?
Jimmy’s Fries & Shakes founder Jimmy Britz knows the quick-service restaurant industry inside and out. After leaving the Army in Hamburg, West Germany, he fell in love with the traditional Canadian dish poutine, and he’s been serving it ever since. And though technology and social media have changed how many franchises work, Britz believes the basics of good food still stand strong today. Britz chose poutine in particular because he wanted to share a unique, tasty food with more of the world. Something that locals would come to love; something that you had to go to Jimmy’s to enjoy. And thus Jimmy’s Fries & Shakes was born. Soon Jimmy was popular enough to open a new place. And soon after that; another came up. He kept going, kept opening restaurants, across multiple states, and each one became a bigger hit with the locals than the last.
It’s Britz’s enjoyment of the fast-paced industry that drives him even today. Between brand-building, team dynamics, and serving the public, he could not be happier with the product and the global opportunities Jimmy’s Fries & Shakes offers potential franchisees. Britz knows there’s a huge feeling of accomplishment being a restaurant CEO, because he’s worked almost every position building—from mopping floors, to fixing the fryers, to owning a franchise himself. Britz understands that putting together the right team is vital to supporting and motivating potential franchisees, that’s why his corporate team is focused on offering flexible solutions to aspiring entrepreneurs. Britz recognizes that today’s franchisees are faced with difficult start-up costs, including the requirement to buy pre-designated equipment, furniture, fittings and fixtures from expensive manufacturers.
That’s why he’s trying to do it better.
Britz wants Jimmy’s Fries & Shakes to be more flexible and more willing to work with franchisees to find the best solution when it comes to stocking a restaurant. That’s why he developed his franchise model with small business owners and owner-operator in its mind.
It’s also working.
Not only are more and more people becoming franchisees with Jimmy’s Fries & Shakes, Britz is receiving feedback that he loves to hear. Franchisees are reporting that their success rates are on the rise because of food quality, corporate support, and unique offerings. In fact, domestic growth is increasing dramatically as new restaurants are exceeding high performance expectations and setting sales volume.
